About
Vic High Reads 2018 is inspired by CBC's Canada Reads -- an annual event in which well-known Canadian celebrities pitch a book that they want ALL Canadians to read. In Canada Reads, each person promotes their choice, debates follow and Canadians vote until one book remains, winning the coveted Canada Reads Book of the Year title. Since 2001, Canada Reads has been a enjoyable way to get large groups of people reading, enjoying, and talking about the same books.
In Vic High Reads, each participating English class this semester (see voting page) will select ONE book to promote from a long list of excellent fiction and non-fiction titles specially selected by your Vic High English teachers, teacher-librarian, and local teen services public librarian. During April and early May, each class will prepare a presentation to pitch and defend the book at the Battle of the Books assembly on May 16. Why? for the same reasons as Canada Reads: fun, competition, love of reading -- but also for the learning that will happen in class activities around the books.
A panel of community judges/ Victoria celebrities will select a class winner -- the class that delivers the best presentation on May 17.
You, the Vic High students, will select the Vic High 2018 book of the year; every student will vote independently in an online poll. You don't have to vote for the book your class presented; you are a free agent at the polls!
Yes, there will be a celebration for the winning class -- and a celebration for the winning book to which all students will be invited. Details TBA.
